Low-Voltage Capacitor Banks

Reactive power compensation is one of main directions of energy saving.

To reduce losses during reactive power transmission and to improve electrical power quality in electrical networks 0.4 kV with frequency 50 Hz, it is necessary to fulfill a compensation of reactive power in close proximity to the consumer. “UKCP”, Ltd. offers a wide range of products for reactive power compensation: Capacitor Banks (adjustable and non-adjustable) UK, UKM (F), UKMT (F) types are designed to compensate a reactive power in 0.4 kV networks.

 

Low-Voltage Capacitor Banks Application

UKMT type capacitor banks perform a reactive power compensation with a step regulation, they are distinguished by speed, and used in networks with fast-alternating loads: stamping equipment, welding equipment, hoisting-and-transport mechanisms, pumps and compressors with variable performance, etc.

UKMF and UKMTF capacitor banks perform reactive power compensation with a step regulation, they are distinguished by the presence of a detuned choke/throttle for each compensation step and are used in networks with a high content of higher harmonic distortion. The application of detuned chokes/throttles allows you to protect the banks from negative effects of harmonic distortion.
The generation of own reactive power allows you to:

  • increase the connected powers of the consumer without upgrading existing power grid;
  • increase the service life of electrical equipment of energy system;
  • improve electrical power quality;
  • increase production rates, as well as the efficiency operation of the enterprise.

Performance and Operation Principle

Low-voltage capacitor banks are produced in the cabinet performance. Floor and hanging cabinets depending on the power and weight according to customer requirements are produced in climatic performance U1; U3; UHL1.

The presence of capacitors in the power supply networks with non-linear loads can provoke the occurrence of resonance phenomena and as a result an increase of current and overheating of the capacitors. To prevent the occurrence of resonant modes it is necessary to use the banks presenting in-series resonant circuit formed by a choke/throttle connected in series with the capacitors. The purpose of this connection is to reduce a resonant frequency of the network up to a value below the lowest higher harmonic. In order to adjust the oscillating circuit, the chokes/throttles are used with mismatching coefficients of 5.67% (210 Hz), 7% (189 Hz) and 14% (134 Hz).
Each value of mismatching factor corresponds to its own resonant frequency. This means that for all harmonics whose frequency lies above the resonance one, the network presents an inductive impedance, which prevents the occurrence of resonant phenomena in the network. This solves the problem of expensive equipment repair that has failed due to the impact of higher harmonic distortions.
